Cardington’s baseball team struggled to string hits together in suffering a 3-0 loss to Newark Catholic at Heath in a district semifinal game Tuesday.

The Pirates were only outhit 8-7 in the contest, but couldn’t translate any of their hits into scores. Meanwhile, the Green Wave put up two runs in the first inning and were able to hold on to their lead the rest of the way.

While Cardington was able to pose multiple threats, NC pitcher Tyler Marmie was able to get outs when necessary to keep the locals from crossing home plate.

In the third inning, Devin Jackson led off with a single and advanced to second on a Daniel Kill sacrifice. While he would make it to third on a wild pitch, he would be stranded there, as Marmie got a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the inning.

Another good chance for the Pirates happened in the fifth inning, as Devin Fridley led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a ground ball. However, he would not be able to advance the rest of the way, as NC recorded a strikeout and fly out to escape unscathed again.

Newark Catholic added an insurance run in the sixth and then held on through the seventh to pick up the win.

Garret Wagner suffered the loss in the contest, while both Devin Pearl and Clayton Clark picked up a pair of hits.
