The street leading to the Morrow County Dog Shelter in Mount Gilead will now have a new name.

The roadway is now officially called Young Avenue, following a naming ceremony on May 18.

A collaborative effort between the Morrow County Commissioners and the village of Mount Gilead dedicated the street to honor the former fire chief Richard “Dick” Young.

Young served as the head of the Mount Gilead Fire Department from 1977 to 1991, after working with the department for several years.

“We were looking for an appropriate name for the street, and I can’t think of a more appropriate one,” Morrow County Commissioner Dick Miller said. “He (Young) did a great service to the community.”

Members of Young’s family including Mount Gilead Fire Chief Greg Young and Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Young, as well as his wife Katie, were in attendance at the street commemorating event.

“We don’t get to name streets that often,” Morrow County Commissioner Tom Whiston said. “I can’t think of a better person to name one after.”
