With a number of returnees, Cardington golf coach Troy King is hoping that his team can earn its second league championship in school history this fall.

Austin Yake, who led the team with a 41.2 average for nine holes last year and was a first-team pick in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference, already has gotten off to a strong start, winning both the MOAC Coaches Invitational and the Danville Invite.

Nadia Kerman returns after being a second-team MOAC performer with a 47.2 average. Both her and another letter-winner, Sage Brannon (57.4 average) will compete on the varsity team during the regular season before taking part in the girls’ sectional meet in the postseason.

Also back are senior Austin Wilson (56.3) and sophomores Jacob Spires (57.0) and Logan Doubikin (58.4).

“These letter-winners have worked hard and put time in all summer long to improve our team position in the conference race,” said King.

With 14 participants on the team, the coach feels that many different golfers could have the opportunity to help the team, citing senior Mac Warren and freshman Cayman Spires as examples.

“Our goals are to improve on last year’s 183.4 scoring average and to possibly challenge for a conference title that has only happened once in school history,” said King. “These players call and text each other to meet at Pine Lakes to practice and improve their game. Early on, the team has real good team unity and will push each other to improve each week.”
