Lending hand on Arbor Day

On Friday, 30 students and teachers from Tri-Rivers Career Center spent the day in Mount Gilead planting trees and grass, weeding and landscaping to complete a community service project at the Whetstone Center, 406 Bank St. in Mount Gilead, for Morrow County Developmental Disabilities.

Mount Gilead Village Administrator Derek Allen said this is the second year Tri-Rivers students have pitched in to help with Arbor Day activities. Allen was there with several Mount Gilead crew members to work side by side with students.

Tri-Rivers Director of Career Technology Martin Dzugan said students arrived at 8 a.m. to begin weeding and planting. Students were from Mount Gilead, Cardington and Highland school districts along with other districts at Tri-Rivers.

Morrow DD Outreach Manager Michelle Brown was pleased to see the progress students had made. She said the Whetstone Center was very excited to have Mount Gilead choose it as a site for Arbor Day planting.

Arbor Day activities are part of the qualifications that go into Mount Gilead’s designation as a “Tree City.” Other activities were held at Mount Gilead Park Avenue Elementary School last week.
