The Mount Gilead Barracudas wrapped up another successful summer swim season with a third place finish at the TCAL Championships held at Bucyrus on July 9.

“We were in the running for second, but Upper Sandusky had just enough swimmers in the right events to pull ahead. I was proud of our team for performing well, especially with some delays and things that made the meet take a bit longer than we expected.”

The team wrapped up the season with an awards banquet on July 18.

MG did have two gold medalists at the championships. Michael Snopik placed first in the 50 free, 100 free and 50 back. Erin Zmuda earned gold in the 100 fly.

Silver medalists at the meet included the 9-10 boys medley relay (Nathan Rabun, Luke Frazier, Brice Haughn and Carson Mowery); Evan Zmuda, 200 IM, 200 free and 100 breast; Brice Haughn, 25 fly; Joel Conrad, 100 free; Luke Frazier, 25 breast and Erin Zmuda, 50 free.

Bringing home bronze medals in relay events were the 11-12 boys medley relay (Michael Snopik, Wesley Bush, Joel Conrad and Mason Kidwell); the 15-18 boys medley relay and ‘A’free relay (Logan Conrad, Evan Zmuda, Casey Conrad and Daniel Freeman); the 9-10 boys free relay (Brice Haughn, Luke Frazier, Carson Mowery and Hawke Littell); and the 11-12 boys A free relay (Michael Snopik, Joel Conrad, Mason Kidwell and Nathan Rabun).

“Championship meets have very deep scoring, so even swimmers that didn’t place in the top three are vital to the team’s success. This is especially true of relays, so when we have swimmers willing to swim up an age group or try a relay that is new for them, it is really important,” said Snow.
