Waynedale claimed the championship trophy at the 12th annual Pirate Duals, hosted by Cardington on Saturday.

This year, 10 teams took the mats in the event. Each squad competed in five-team groups, taking on the other four teams. The champions in each group would challenge each other for first place, while the other teams competed for third, fifth, seventh and ninth.

Waynedale dominated the competition in picking up the title. In the round-robin rounds, they defeated New London 64-18, Ayersville 63-12, Coshocton 64-12 and Garaway 68-6. They would then beat Ridgewood 62-12 in the championship match.

As a result, a lot of the meet honors went the way of the Bears. Christian Wellman, competing at 182 pounds, was named the day’s Outstanding Wrestler; while 113-pounder Tristan Anderson got the Most Falls in the Least Time award for pinning all five of his opponents in a total of 4:53.

Wellman and Anderson were joined by teammates Evan Hostetler (126), Mike Wilson (132), Tucker Wirth (145), Logan Stanley (152), Reid Stanley (160) and Kyle Ice (170) on the All-Tournament team, which is composed of all wrestlers who went 5-0 on the day.

Also on the All-Tournament team were Taiylor Hubley (103) and Jarrod Fair (195) of Cardington; Marshall Stull (220) of Danville; Kyle Bergeron (120) of Coshocton; Josh Liggett (285) of Garaway; Arryk Davidson (106), Trevor Reed (138) and Adonn Kruki (195) of New London; and Richie Stalnaker (132), Nick Jewett (138) and Nathan Liesen (145) of Newark Catholic.

In the other championship-round bouts, Coshocton topped Mifflin 54-26 for third place, Ayersville beat Newark Catholic 42-25 for fifth, New London defeated Danville 52-36 for seventh and Garaway defeated the host school 60-12 for ninth.

The Pirates only had four wrestlers see action in more than one match, which prevented them from claiming any team wins on the day. However, those wrestlers all had a good bit of individual success.

At 106 pounds, Hubley went 5-0 with one pinfall and four forfeits. Fair also was 5-0 at 195. He took three wins by pin, one by decision and one by major decision.

At 126, Adam Hook was 4-1. He took three wins by pin and claimed other by forfeit. Gabe McAvoy was 3-2 with one pin and two forfeits at 285, while at 138, Bobby Davis picked up one win by forfeit.

Marion Harding Winter Classic

Northmor took third place in the 36-team Marion Harding Winter Classic, which was held Monday and Tuesday.

The Knights finished with 133.5 points and boasted six place-winners in the meet. At 132 pounds, Conan Becker went 5-1 to take second place. Both Jake Neer (106, 4-1) and Aaron Kitts (120, 5-1) claimed third place in the meet. Jake Farley went 4-2 at 145 pounds for fourth place, Griffin Jenkins had a 5-2 mark at 126 pounds for fifth and Nathan Price took sixth at 220, going 3-3 in the tournament.

Also, Wyatt Collier (113), Matthew Ross (138), Brad Baker (152), Ben Singer (170) and D.J. Christo (182) all won either once or twice.

Mount Gilead also competed at Harding, finishing 27th with 33 points. Billy Matyac highlighted the MG performance by taking fifth place at 160 pounds with a 4-2 mark. Hunter Trimmer came one match away from placing at 170, going 3-2 in the meet; while Troy Whitt and Brandon Strickland also claimed wins.

Highland Scots

Two Highland wrestlers placed at the Medina Invitational Tournament, held Sunday and Monday.

At 138 pounds, Dakota Bunting boasted a 5-1 record to finish third in that weight class. Zach Baker went 3-2 at 195 pounds to finish in fourth place.
