On Thursday, Cardington advanced to the district semifinals by toppling Newark Catholic by a 48-35 margin.

The Pirates jumped out to a fast start against their opponents and never looked back, as they took a 17-4 lead after the first quarter and expanded it to a 25-7 margin by the half. The Green Wave trimmed seven points off their deficit in the third quarter, getting within a 37-26 margin, but Cardington held on to finish on top by 13.

After the team’s win the previous night with Fairbanks, head coach Jamie Edwards noted his team had been running recent practices in a way to prepare them for two games in two nights.

“We’ve been treating every practice like it’s three days before a game, so we have the lungs and wind,” he said.

Sage Brannon led Cardington with 14 points, while Mikayla Conrad added 10 and Kyndall Spires scored nine.
