The Cardington eighth grade basketball team picked up two more wins recently. First, they hosted Northmor. They jumped out to an early 16-2 lead and then cruised to a 55-12 victory behind strong offensive play from Casey Bertke (32 points),Taylor Linkous (eight points) and Hannah Wickline (seven points).

They then traveled to East Knox and improved to 11-0 with a 49-36 win. East Knox kept the game competitive early with their box-and-one defense designed to stop Bertke. The Lady Pirates countered with an aggressive full-court press and took a 27-20 lead into halftime. In the third stanza, Linkous hit her second three-pointer of the game and Emily Pearl hit a long jumper to spark a 16-9 run that left the Pirates with a 43-29 lead heading into the fourth period.

Bertke tallied 28 points for the game, Linkous added nine, Wickline had eight and Pearl scored four.

MG vs. Highland — eighth grade girls

Mount Gilead edged Highland in eighth grade basketball on Monday thanks to a fourth quarter comeback. The young Lady Scots led 4-3 after one quarter of play, 8-7 at the half and 15-13 after three quarters, but MG took the fourth 12-5 to finish on top in the game.

For Highland, Taylor Edwards and Madison Cecil both scored six and Brooklyn Baird added four.
