Author Sheryl Smart Hall will give an insider’s look at her book “Warren G. Harding & the Marion Daily Star: How Newspapering Shaped a President” at the Escape the Ordinary Adult Summer Reading Program Book Discussion on Tuesday, July 21, 7 p.m., at the Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry Street.
President Warren G. Harding’s 39 year career as a newspaperman is often treated as a footnote. His political successes were based on the thinking of a newspaper editor—balancing all of the facets of an issue, examining the facts and weighing the effect on the constituents. Even his approach to balancing the federal budget was built on early experience at his small, struggling newspaper, where his motto was: “All paid in, all paid out, books even.”
Hall, who in addition to being an author is director of the Harding Home & Memorial in Marion will offer a unique perspective to the Harding story by looking at him through the eyes of those who knew him best—his co-workers at the Marion Star. Books will be available to purchase and an autograph session will follow program.
.The program is free and open to the public of all ages. Refreshments served. Participants are encouraged to sign up for the Escape the Ordinary Adult Summer Reading Program to be eligible for weekly and monthly prizes.
