CARDINGTON — Gary Goodman graduated from Cardington-Lincoln High School in June, 1981. Two weeks later a tornado ripped through the village, leveling most businesses including the fire department’s fire house
Although there is no direct connection, Goodman joined the fire department that fall because he says, “I like to help people.”
During the “Christmas in Cardington” celebration Thursday evening, Goodman was awarded a plaque from the fire department recognizing his 40 years of service.
His service began when Jim Ullom was fire chief and he climbed from firemen, to lieutenant, captain, assistant chief and chief. The current assistant chief, Jeff Benson, presented the plaque on behalf of the department.
Also recognizing him for his dedication was the village of Cardington represented by Mayor Susie Peyton, who presented him with a certificate of recognition and a history of the fire department.
It was noted the department helps with many other functions including working the pop shack at football games, helping with village events such as Memorial Day and they assist the Sons of the American Legion by placing American flags on poles in the village for specific holidays.
The department currently has 19 members.
