ASHLAND TO HOLD SPRING OPEN HOUSE – The Ashland University Office of Admissions will hold its Spring Open House event on Saturday, April 23. The event, which is ideal for high school juniors and transfer students, will begin at 9 a.m. in Myers Convocation Center on the AU campus.
“This Spring Open House allows our guests to interact with faculty, staff and current Ashland University students,” said W.C. Vance, director of undergraduate admissions at AU. “The event provides an overview of the University, including scholarship information and academic presentations as well as a student-led campus tour and campus information fair.”
The event also provides an opportunity for parents and students to take a tour of the new College of Nursing and Health Sciences facility located in Mansfield.

ASHLAND TO HOST A CAPPELLA CONCERT – The student-led contemporary a cappella group Surround Sound, housed through the Ashland University Department of Music, presents its annual concert on Sunday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
This year’s showcase concert will feature many contemporary pop hits including Bastille’s Pompeii, Meghan Trainor’s Dear Future Husband, Adele’s Someone Like You, George Ezra’s Budapest along with arrangements made popular by Billy Joel and Pentatonix. A couple of the pieces are arrangements written by one of the group’s founding members and AU alumna Brandy Kay Riha.
Surround Sound is currently comprised of 13 vocalists including Madeleine Beck (Brunswick), Drew Berlin (Barberton), Hayden Coey (Greenwich), Ruth Chilcote (Ashland), Deric Dove (Newark), Karissa Magnacca (Wadsworth), Kayla Phares (North Kingsville), Jacob Poiner (Wellington), Emily Sparks (Greenwich), Emily Sycks (Bluffton), Eryn Tramel (Medina), Alexander Trotter (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) and Hannah Wise (Hartville).

HERITAGE HALL TO HOST MUSEUM, RUMMAGE SALE – The Marion County Historical Society is having a Museum and Membership Rummage sale on Saturday April 23, from 9-5 PM. The sale will be held in the auditorium at Heritage Hall and also in the parking lot behind the museum, weather permitting. A Members Only Presale will be held on Friday April 22 from 4-6 p.m. Bring your Membership ID for admittance to the presale.
Proceeds from this event will be used to purchase collections preservation supplies and to support the MCHS operating budget. The mission of the Marion County Historical Society is to document the history of Marion County, Ohio by identifying, collecting, and preserving artifacts, records and personal papers of value from Marion County residents, organizations, businesses, and related groups from the prehistoric times to the present. Items included in this sale are donated specifically to be sold for the benefit of MCHS.
Anyone wishing to donate good used items to MCHS for the sale may bring them to Heritage Hall between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. from April 18-21. Call 740-387-4255 prior to bringing your items so we can have someone available to help unload your vehicle.

ASHLAND STUDENT TO MODERATE DISCUSSION – Ashland University’s Director of Auxiliary Services Matthew Portner was recently selected to serve on this year’s indiCo Board and moderate a discussion at the second annual Textbook Affordability Conference. IndiCo is an independent subsidiary of National Association of College Stores (NACS), created to assist independent college stores.
The Textbook Affordability Conference of 2016 will be held April 27-29 at the University of California, Davis. Keynote speaker Adela de La Torre, the University of California’s vice chancellor of student affairs and campus diversity, will speak on the importance of student success at the conference.
Portner will moderate the panel titled, “Creating the All-Source Model: Where Content meets Commerce.” This session will include store directors who have engaged in open and/or affordable initiatives on their campuses.
The main objective of the conference is to help attendees of the event—librarians, IT directors, instructional designers, etc.—see the advantages of open and affordable tactics. The discussion also will assist stores in seeing their role in “free” content.
