MOUNT GILEAD — The Perry Cook Memorial Public Library (PCML) presents the 2022 Summer Reading Program this June and July. Registration opens June 6 and the program runs until July 29, 2022.
In addition to the annual reading challenge, PCML will be offering an array of in-person programming. With the support of a grant from the State Library of Ohio, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, PCML will host Hungry Town, a folk duo from Vermont, Magic Nate from Columbus, Stevens Puppets from Indiana and Drummunity from Ann Arbor.
Additional programming includes a life size version of Candy Land, a raptor program presented by the Bird Sanctuary of Ohio and a Lego tournament. The program is open to children and adults.
Summer Reading programs are a long standing feature of public library programming. According to the American Library Association, 95% of public libraries in the United States offer some type of summer reading program.
“Extensive research by many universities and public interest organizations indicate that focused reading during out of school times helps students retain the skills they worked so hard to gain,” says Patricia Dollisch, Director at PCML. “Even 20 minutes a day, especially with a caring adult, is a huge help.”
For every 2 hours of reading or participation in literacy activities, participants will earn raffle tickets for weekly drawings. Prizes include a four pack of tickets to King’s Island, tickets to the Akron Rubber Ducks, Marion Water Park, Splatter Park and other attractions in the area.
The final celebration, reserved for those who earn a ticket by completing the reading game board (16 hours of reading or literacy activities), is a party at the Richland Carrousel in Mansfield. “It’s going to be great fun,” says Jane Wiggenhorn, Children’s Programming Coordinator. “We’ve planned refreshments, there will be unlimited rides for the duration of the party and Biscuit the Puppy, from the books by Alyssa Capucilli, will be there. We are really looking forward to this summer’s programs.”
