This morning in Friends Meeting I thought about the “we.” The people who think of us as a family, a community, a nation, a world, putting we ahead of I. Atticus would say you can’t really know another person until you walk around in his skin. Jesus said to love each other as our selves, which to me means to love others as we would like to be loved and understood. Ma Joad told hungry children in the migrant camps to get sticks and scoop what they could from her oatmeal pan.

Those who are working for an immediate response to man-made global warming are thinking of those in low-lying places who are going under much faster than we at first thought, even though most of us think we’re safe.

I do believe as a world we/WE can make a difference for good, stop discounting the poor and the weak and the far away, use our gifts to do more than make money, expand our understanding by listening to many views, really listening.

I love that so many of my friends and former students are doing just that, seeing a larger world, using their good brains, listening, caring for each other and each others families, reaching out to strangers in a strange land, shining as good Americans.
