A K-9 member of the Mount Gilead Police Department is battling a form of canine lymphoma.

Segar, part of the K-9 police duo with Officer Tom Cronenwett, has been limited in his work with the department as he has been undergoing a series of tests at MedVet in Columbus to find out the best course of treatment for the disease.

“We are waiting to see the official results before pursuing treatment,” Mount Gilead Police Chief Brian Zerman said at the March 21 village council meeting.

“It’s a non-aggressive form of lymphoma and very treatable,” added Mount Gilead Council Member Donna Carver after speaking with Cronenwett.

Carver also noted the dog was integral in finding missing 14-year-old autistic teenager Brandon Reelhorn.

Sticking to the canine world, members of council took reconsidering the village ordinance banning “Pit-Bulls” one step further by passing the proposed restructured legislation’s second reading.

Should the legislative initiative be passed after its third and final reading at the April 4 council meeting, Mount Gilead will soften its stance on breeds falling under the “Pit-Bull” moniker.

Additionally, the Mount Gilead Police Department is continuing its search for another full-time officer. Zerman reported the department currently has five applicants but is looking to extend its application period for more interested interviewees.

The Police Chief noted that several other larger departments are also hiring, which he believes has dwindled the pool of applicants for the Mount Gilead position.

Also, the opening date for the Dollar Tree is set for March 23, ahead of its estimated April opening, Village Administrator Dan Rogers told Council.

Rogers specified that the store would host an official grand opening event April 2 at 10 a.m.
