GREENWOOD, Ind. — The fledgling Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) saw its ranks grow this week while the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) watched its membership decline.
G-MAC Commissioner Tom Daeger announced Monday that five new members have been added to the conference roster. And all five are current GLIAC members.
Findlay, Hillsdale, Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican and Walsh will begin competition in the league during the 2017-18 academic year, according to Daeger.
“The Great Midwest Athletic Conference is pleased to welcome five new members to the league who will significantly assist in the growth and prosperity of the G-MAC in NCAA Division II,” said Daeger. “Findlay, Hillsdale, Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican and Walsh embrace similar ideologies to those of current G-MAC members and are a tremendous fit. They also share the desire of seeking excellence in academics, athletics and in the personal development of student-athletes.”
That makes a total of six GLIAC schools that have defected to the G-MAC this year. Malone was announced as a new member in May and will officially begin competition during the 2016-17 academic year.
The G-MAC membership includes Alderson Broaddus (WV), Cedarville (OH), Davis & Elkins (WV), Kentucky Wesleyan, Ohio Valley (WV), Trevecca Nazarene (TN) and Ursuline (OH). The league was established in 2011.
Meanwhile, back in the GLIAC, the league membership has now dropped from 16 to 10. The remaining league members are Ashland, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan, Northwood, Saginaw Valley State, Tiffin and Wayne State.
According to published reports, Ashland declined an invitation to join the G-MAC and will remain in the GLIAC.
