Liberty Union was able to ride a fast start and eliminate Highland from the Division III girls’ basketball playoffs by a 62-43 margin Wednesday.

The host Lions jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter, which they increased to a 33-19 advantage at the half and a 56-28 score at the end of three. Highland took the fourth 15-6, but Liberty Union held on to advance in the postseason.

Erica Sardinha scored 11 points to lead Highland, while Kenzie Fuller picked up nine.

Mount Gilead Indians

Mount Gilead’s girls saw their basketball season ended at the hands of top-seeded Africentric Early College in the Division III sectionals by a 75-5 margin.

The visiting Indians found themselves in a 17-2 hole after the first quarter and then were held scoreless over the middle two periods as Africentric built a commanding lead. MG would add a three-pointer in the final period of play, but the Nubians continued to pull away for the win.
