COLUMBUS — One week after Jalin Marshall re-emerged as a playmaker on Ohio State’s offense, wide receiver Dontre Wilson might get the chance to do the same thing at Indiana on Saturday.

“We’re going to see a little more of Dontre this week,” Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer said on the live version of his weekly radio show on WBNS 97.1 FM on Thursday.

Wilson has caught three passes and rushed the ball twice this season after two surgeries to repair a broken foot he suffered in last year’s Michigan State game.

When Ohio State won a recruiting battle with Oregon and signed Wilson out of DeSoto, Texas in 2013, big things were expected. And not just by fans. Quarterback Braxton Miller said he hoped he would start right away after throwing to him in the summer.

But the anticipated big plays have not consistently materialized. Wilson’s career-long catch is 40 yards and his longest run is 26 yards.

Meyer said a big reason Wilson hasn’t gotten more opportunities is that he wasn’t physically ready for college football. At 195 pounds now, 20 pounds heavier than he was as a freshman, he is more equipped for the physicality of the college game.

“He has never been a full-time player because he has never been big and strong enough,” Meyer said. “This is the first year that I have no doubt he can go out there and hold the point blocking and block on the perimeter. The first year and a half he couldn’t do it.”

NOTES:

O-G GRAD WITH HOOSIERS: Dan Godsil, a freshman from Ottawa-Glandorf, is a long snapper on punts for Indiana.

Godsil, who was a first-team All-Western Buckeye League linebacker last season, is a preferred walk-on. Last year was his first season of long snapping.

ELLIOTT CAN BLOCK: Meyer called junior running back Ezekiel Elliott the best blocking running back he has been around in college football.

“He is, without question, the best I’ve ever been around. He is very violent in his blocking downfield. Pass protection is almost second nature to him, he’s so good at it,” Meyer said. “Former NFL coach Brian Billick says he is one of the best he has ever seen.”

NO BOSA WORRIES: All-American defensive end Joey Bosa has been credited with only one-half of a sack this season after accumulating 13.5 of them last season.

Meyer said this doesn’t worry him. “Joey Bosa doesn’t have the number of sacks he had at this point last year but he’s certainly been disruptive,” he said.

OCTOBER MADNESS?: Meyer compared the pressure on national championship contenders to be perfect with basketball’s March Madness.

“With the way college football is, there is no preseason. This is like March Madness. Every game is the world to us. You can’t have any swings and misses,” he said.

“You start hearing about style points and why did you only win by 38 points. It’s nuts. But we’re not going to change it. It’s the world we live in.”

SPIELMAN ON PRESSURE: When former Ohio State linebacker Chris Spielman spoke in Van Wert on Monday night he also talked about the expectations placed on the Buckeyes this season.

“Everybody put them up as invincible and they’re not. It’s probably a good thing for them that they’ve had some tough games and struggled a little so that they can get refocused on the mission,” he said.

“The only expectation there is to win the national championship. That’s their standard. I’m glad it is. Ohio State is in a rare position. It’s tough to be in, but it’s enviable. They compete against excellence.”
