The Cardington girls’ basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to win their season-opening contest at Fredericktown last Tuesday by a 42-34 score.

The Lady Pirates led 12-11 after the first quarter, but watched their opponents rally to take a 20-17 lead into the half. Fredericktown still led 31-29 going into the final period, but the Pirates scored 13 and only gave up three during those eight minutes to leave with the win.

Dana Bertke scored 12 points to lead Cardington. Both Beth Hardwick and Kambry Edwards added 10 in the game.

Highland Scots

In their season-opening girls’ basketball game held Saturday, the Highland girls were able to battle back to top host Clear Fork by a 38-34 score.

Highland found themselves in a 10-5 hole after the first quarter of play and the Colts were able to maintains leads of 23-18 and 27-23 after the second and third periods, respectively. However, they were able to rally in the final eight minute, outscoring their hosts 15-7 to wind up with the decision.

Emma West scored 15 points, including 10 in the fourth, to lead the Scots. Peyton Carpenter added eight in the win.

Mount Gilead Indians

The Mount Gilead girls’ basketball fell to host Danville by a 59-42 score last Tuesday.

MG fell into a 17-4 hole after the first quarter and trailed 33-10 at the intermission. The score was 49-27 after three periods of play. While the Indians took a 15-10 advantage in the fourth, they would not be able to make up that deficit.

Northmor Golden Knights

Northmor dropped a 63-45 decision at Centerburg in Tuesday night girls’ basketball action.

The Golden Knights led 13-11 after the opening period, but a huge second quarter by the Trojans put them into a hole. Centerburg took a 22-7 edge over those eight minutes to move in front 33-20. Northmor would then be edged 17-15 in the third and 13-11 in the fourth, as the Trojans were able to maintain a double-digit lead.

Lexi Wenger had a big game for the Golden Knights, finishing with 25 of her team’s 45 points.
