The Kenyon College women’s soccer team took 29 shots Sunday and didn’t have a goal to show for it. The team’s opponent, the University of Mount Union, took just six shots, but got the goal it needed to escape Mavec Field with a 1-0 win.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 0-3 to start the season and the Ladies have just one goal in those three games—despite out-shooting opponents by a combined tally of 46-40.

Mt. Union, now 1-2, produced the only goal late in the first half. With 33:32 already cleared off the clock, the Purple Raiders saw Carolyn Balzano rip a shot at the Kenyon net. Senior goalkeeper Alissa Poolpol was there to make the save, but she couldn’t corral the rebound, which trickled out to Nicole Lanese. Lanese then booted the loose ball over the line for her first goal of the season.

Play was back-and-forth during the first half, but in the second Kenyon practically camped in the Mt. Union zone. The Ladies possessed the ball for the majority of those final 45 minutes and even peppered the Purple Raiders goal with 14 shots. The majority of those shots, however, were off target. Mt. Union goalkeeper Paige Freel had to make just three saves in the second half and eight for the game.

Poolpol finished with three saves for the Ladies, who have another home game Wednesday. They’ll take on John Carroll University in a non-conference contest with a 4:30 p.m. start.
