After an excellent high school track career that resulted in being a two-time third-place finisher in the 100-meter dash at the state track meet, Mount Gilead’s Olivia Brewer will be continuing to run for the Ohio University Bobcats.

Brewer, who was also looking at Heidelberg and Ashland, noted that family ties played a big role in her decision.

“My mom (Lisa) went to OU, so I’ve always had an interest,” she said. “I took a visit and loved it. I really fell in love with the campus and, obviously, the track coach was really nice, too.”

Brewer, who will major in nursing, is expecting to continue working with the sprints. This year, she not only placed in the 100, but also competed in the 200 and 800-meter relay in the state meet, after running in those three races and the 400-meter relay in regionals and districts. She also was a four-time winner in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference meet.

“I’m so excited,” she said. “It’ll be a great experience, I think. They didn’t really say — they said there would be a great opportunity for me. I’d assume it’d be the short sprints again.”

Brewer feels the biggest adjustment she’ll have to face is simply the change in location.

“Probably getting used to being away from home,” she said. “It’ll be really different going from living at home to being two-and-a-half hours away. I’m going to miss running with my little sister (Jessica). I ran with her for one year.”

However, she is looking forward to her future experiences.

“Just the different people I’m going to meet along the way and the new experiences,” she replied when asked what she’s looking forward to.
