The Cardington Lady Pirates opened their defense of the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference’s Blue Division title in fine fashion on Friday, as they topped host Mount Gilead by an 86-18 margin.

The Pirates jumped all over MG in the early going, taking a 26-5 lead after the opening quarter and boosting it to a 52-6 margin by the half. Cardington then scored 17 points in both the third and fourth quarters to continue pulling away in the contest.

Kynlee Edwards led the Pirates with 23 points, hitting four three-pointers in the game. Kyndall Spires added 19, while Sage Brannon tallied 16 and Casey Bertke picked up 14.

Mount Gilead was led by Madison Fitzpatrick’s seven points.

Northmor Lady Knights

Northmor fell in their season-opening girls’ basketball game, as they lost 51-39 to Colonel Crawford on Saturday. No further information was available by deadline.

Highland bowling

The Highland Scots swept Ridgedale in bowling action on Saturday.

The girls took a 1663-1234 win over the Rockets. Halie O’Leary had both the high game (171) and series (322) for the Scots. Also, Erin Conners rolled a 165, Hailey Howard had games of 157 and 153 and May Watson tallied 156 pins.

The boys’ team took their match by a narrow 1930-1865 score. Dana Hicks led the team with a high game of 213 and high series of 363. Joey Bennett added scores of 188 and 162, while Wade Adkins rolled 165 and 158 and Zach DeBord had a game of 189.

All-Ohio Volleyball

Highland senior Ashton Terrill was recently given All-Ohio recognition for her efforts this season in volleyball. Terrill was named honorable mention in Division III.

All-District Football

Mount Gilead’s Jonah Barnett was named the Central District Offensive Player of the Year in Division V after a season in which he ran for 2443 yards and 36 touchdowns, while picking up 9.2 yards per carry.

He and lineman Danny Williamson were both named to the first team offense, while defensive back Tyler Bland was named to the first team defense. Also, Anthony Clark received honorable mention recognition.

In Division IV, six Highland players received honors. Back Jared Limings was named to the first team offense, while lineman Zach Baker got on the first team defense. Javier Vasquez (tight end) was a second team offense pick. Also, Austyn Albanese and Satchel Denton were special mention picks and Dylan Tuggle received honorable mention.

Players from Cardington and Northmor received honors in Division VI. For the Pirates, both receiver Devin Pearl and quarterback Luke McCarrell were first team offense picks, while defensive back Daniel Kill was a first team defense selection. Both Brandon Steckel and Garrett Wagner received special mention and Clayton Clark was an honorable mention pick.

Northmor’s Demetrius Johnson was a second team offense pick at wide receiver, while Matthew Ross received special mention. Also, Conan Becker, Kolton Smith and Jordan Wiseman all received honorable mention nods.
