Edison Council announced dates for their Trick-or-treat night on Sat. Oct. 31 from 5-6 p.m.

They also welcome the community to an Open House and “Bell Ringing” on Sunday, Nov. 15 from 2-4 p.m. They encourage people to bring pictures and historical memorabilia of Edison for people to look at. Edison Council Members will provide refreshments.

Mount Gilead School Board Member Virgil Staley visited Edison Council at their October 12 meeting to make a pitch for the accomplishments of the school board, and briefly spoke about his candidacy for school board member.

Staley spoke of the many positive qualities in the district including a good teaching staff, principals and coaches. He noted that the Vocational Ag department has several going to the national convention with American Farmers and an excellent soils team. Band, football and cross country are also doing well this year.

Staley says he doesn’t anticipate that the district will need to have a levy within the next three or four years. He said that several grants and a good deal on bus purchases helped the budget.

Council Member April Anthony asked about fixing the Edison School Building for use. Staley said the school board was given an estimate of $800,000 to get the building up to code for use. He said there were no definite plans for the building at this time. It has been suggested that the block buildings could be used for storage for the district. Both block buildings need a new roof.

Staley gave a little of the history of the school building since last spring when state inspectors said the Edison School building either had to be brought up to code, or the Tomorrow Center would have to vacate the building. With a cost of $800,000 for renovation to bring it to code, the decision was to take the Tomorrow Center to Cardington.

When asked about growth in the district, Staley said that the number of students has been stable for the last few years with 1,200 to 1,300. He said there are two places open on the school board at election next month with three candidates running. He asked for council members votes for his re-election. Mayor Sandy Ackerman thanked Staley for his update on the schools.

Street Commissioner Jerry Reeder said his crew has widened Henry Street this month. He said widening and maintenance needs done every two years since the street isn’t used a lot and tends to have weeds and grasses grow up in it.

Reeder also said that the Park committee should look into a car port or awning set up for the cement slab at the park. He said the cost would be about $500 and would be a less expensive alternative to building a pavilion or shelter. Some council members suggested that a wind could blow a carport away. But Reeder said he believes it could be anchored into the cement.

Village Attorney Denise Martin said that she had done some research into the marijuana issues on the November ballot. She plans to attend a meeting on the subject in Delaware next week. She said there is a lot of information about both issues on line for voters to read.

Council approved payment of September bills for $13,461.98 and for October bills to date of $2,696.61. The next meeting of the Edison Village Council will be Mon. Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the village municipal building.
