The Eyes of Freedom Memorial Exhibit will be on display in Galion High School gymnasium starting Aug. 31 through Friday, Sept. 4. The truck that carries the exhibit will be on display in the parking lot across from Unkarich Stadium during the Tigers home football game the evening of September 4.
The exhibit honors the 23 Marines of Lima Company who were killed during combat. One of those who sacrificed his life was Galion’s Kendall Ivy, a 1995 graduate of Galion High School.
“This is a special and unique opportunity for our school to host this amazing tribute to 23 brave individuals,” High School Principal Ron Williams said. “It is my hope that the students, teachers and community spend time at this exhibit and leave with a greater appreciation for the sacrifices our military members and their families make every day.”
Ivy, who was killed in the line of duty May 11, 2005, is memorialized in the High School cafetorium and in the Galion football team’s meeting room. The district recognized Ivy and his family’s sacrifices during a special jersey retirement ceremony September 21, 2007.
“It is truly an honor for our district to have the opportunity to host an exhibit of this caliber,” Superintendent Mark Stefanik said. “Mr. Ivy’s sacrifice, along with his 22 comrades, is one example of the countless sacrifices our military service men and women make daily. I hope our community will take time to come out and show their respect for these 23 heros.”
The exhibit will only be available for public viewing during the following schedule:
Monday, August 31 – 3-6 pm
Tuesday, September 1 – noon-8 pm
Wednesday, September 2 – 3-6 pm
