MOUNT GILEAD — Save-A-Lot is closing by the end of the month.

A note posted this week at the entrance of the store at 133 Iberia St. informed customers:

“We will be closing by the end of September. Thank you for your patronage over the years. The entire Geyer’s team will miss serving you and the Mount Gilead community. It has been our pleasure to be your local grocery store. Thank You, Geyer’s Save A Lot team.”

Geyer’s opened here in 1945.

Save-A-Lot is marketed as a discount supermarket chain carrying brand-name and private-label grocery items.

As word spread of the closing, residents took to Facebook to share their thoughts.

Karolyn Lewis posted: “Sorry to hear this news. Hope the employees find new jobs.”

Others recall the store fondly.

“That is where I got my meat and loved their ham loaf,” wrote Rosemary Wilson Levings.
