Candace Heer and Amanda Wood, from the Morrow County Extension Office, spoke to Cardington Seniors during their monthly meeting held March 24 at the Senior Center in Mount Gilead.

The women discussed nutrition and ways to shop smart, explaining unit pricing. They had unit price stickers for the seniors to examine and displayed nutritional labels that showed serving size and variousnutrients per serving. Labels, they said, will be changing soon so they are easier to understand.

The program concluded with all those present making a trail mix after checking the nutrients in each ingredient. The guest speakers also had samples of fruit infused H 2 0 to drink. This is a low calorie way to make H 2 O more tasty and thus increase the fluid intake, they said.

Introducing these guest speakers was Carolyn Poorman, program chairman.

During this meeting, Linda Ruehrmund gave updates on coming events at the Senior Center including the county-wide Senior Day on Thursday, May 18. There are several trips planned and a Rummage Sale is planned for May 4-5.

Giving the devotions was Pastor Steve Dennis from St Paul Lutheran Church, Cardington. Devotions were based on Psalm 142, ‘When our spirit goes faint the Lord knows the way even in bad times.”

The lunch, which featured chicken noodle casserole, was served by the Seniors on Center Staff. Cookies were made by seniors Phyllis Jiles and Luella Thomas.

The next meeting will be held Friday, April 28, at the Seniors Center The entree, scheduled to be beef and noodles, will be served at 12 p.m. All seniors are invited. Reservations and/or cancellations should be made by noon on Thursday, April 27, by calling 419-946-4191. Cookies for the April meeting will be provided by Clara McClenathan and Marlene Renz.
