CLEVELAND TEACHERS UNION CHIEF APPLAUDS CLINTON PICK – On Saturday, the executive council of the American Federation of Teachers voted overwhelmingly to endorse Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary for president of the United States. The AFT is the first national union to endorse in the Democratic presidential primary.
David Quolke, who is president of the Cleveland Teachers Union and an AFT vice president, lauded the endorsement, stating, “During each presidential election season, my home state—a key swing state—is not just in the middle of our nation, it’s at the center of the action. Our members are excited to get in there early and start making calls and knocking on doors for Hillary Clinton.”
Quolke continued, “We went to work for Sherrod Brown in 2006 and 2012 because he is the champion we need in the Senate. And in 2016, we will go to work for Hillary, because she is the champion we need in the White House. Hillary Clinton will fight on behalf of Ohio’s kids and working families.”
DEWINE WARNS OF RENTAL SCAMS – Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine today warned consumers to beware of phony listings for apartment and house rentals.
In the past year, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office has received more than a dozen complaints about potential rental scams. Consumers who lose money report losses ranging from $500 to $5,500.
“Anyone who goes online to find an apartment or a house should watch for scams,” Attorney General DeWine said. “If you’re asked to wire a deposit before you’ve even seen the property or met the landlord, it’s likely a scam. You also should check with your county auditor to see who truly owns the property before making any payments.”
BROWN ANNOUNCES $1 MILLION IN FEDERAL EMERGENCY FUNDS TO HELP CLEAN UP TANKER SPILL – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced $1 million in federal emergency funding to help repair a local bridge after a tanker truck carrying ethanol overturned and caught fire on I-270 South under I-70 East earlier this month. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) funding will help make repairs to the bridge on Interstate-70 west of downtown Columbus.
“The closure of I-70 wasn’t just a headache for commuters; the highway is also a critical artery carrying our Ohio-made goods to market,” Brown said. “This federal funding will help repair the damage from this month’s accident and improve our state’s infrastructure.
The DOT Emergency Relief funding will help the Ohio Department of Transportation cover the cost of replacing the bridge deck, making repairs to one of the bridge piers, and repaving the road.
