Americorps member, Jamaila Duffy is enthusiastic about the opportunity to assist Mount Gilead and Cardington Library patrons with their computer and technology questions and problems. Duffy is the newest Americorps member to work in the Guiding Ohio Online program.
Duffy grew up in Hilliard, Ohio and is a graduate of The Ohio State University. She said the primary qualification for the Guiding Ohio Online program is a willingness and enthusiasm to help others with their questions on computers and technology.
The aim of the Guiding Online program is primarily to serve rural areas with lower populations that don’t have as much access to technology. For those areas, the public libraries are often the main source of technology for the community and most now have computers that can be used without a charge.
Duffy said that more and more information is now available only online and it’s important for people to be able to access that information. Some examples are voting location and registration, jobs and employment, banking and financial information.
Mount Gilead Library Director, Mike Kirk said that Duffy will primarily be working with individuals this fall in one-on-one tutoring and answering patrons’ questions. She will also be developing courses for next year such as basic computing, how to use Microsoft Word, using Skype and Ancestry.com.
Mount Gilead seventh grader, Angelina Bowers was working on her homework at the library and was very happy to have Duffy work with her on finding some information on the computer.
Duffy is happy to work with both youth and adults.
Duffy said she is willing to work with any questions on computers or technology that library patrons have. Appointments aren’t required, but her schedule will vary, so it’s good to call or email for an appointment. People are always welcome to ask if she’s available when they’re visiting the library.
Duffy will be at the Mount Gilead Public Library Tuesday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Thurs. 2 – 8 p.m.,
Fri. 12 – 6 p.m. and the second Sat. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Duffy will be at the Cardington Library Mon. and Wed. 10:30 a.m. – 7 p.m., Thurs. 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and fourth Sat. 10:30 – 2 p.m.
