The fourth annual Karen D. Fishburn Stewardship Award was made when the annual Morrow County Red Cross Volunteer banquet was held.

Named recipients were Doris and the late Dale Hildebrand. Presenting the award was Jack Fishburn and Andy Wick, grandson of the Hildebrands.

“This year’s recipients of the Karen Fishburn Award is being presented to a married couple in our community that have demonstrated the exceptional performance and extensive personal commitment to the improvement of the American Red Cross services in our community,” said Fishburn.

He explained the couple had made a significant impact on not only their home town community but they played a major role in strengthening the Red Cross Blood program in Morrow County as well as the North Central Ohio Chapter.

“One of these individuals has been a vital community volunteer in making one of our local blood drives the tremendous success that it has been over a period of many years.

She explained that Doris “has been the driving force as a coordinator of our most successful blood drive location in Morrow County at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Johnsville.”

The other member of this special couple, it was noted, is an individual who provided most of his volunteer service on

The Other Sides of the Needle and amassed an unbelievable blood donation of 300 units of blood- a total of over 37 gallons of donated blood.

Sadly, this all time blood donor passed away a couple of years ago.

“But we want to recognize this amazing couple for their volunteer community service through the American Red Cross.,” said Fishburn. Accepting the award was Doris Hildebrand, wife of Dale and grandmother of Andy.

The Years of Service awards were made by Fawn Mollenkopf, chairperson

of the Morrow County Leadership Council, to Andrew Wick, 10 years; Sandie Fisher and Jackie Weaver, each 15 years; Barbara Chapman and Dwight McFarland, each 25 years and Ruth Logan, 30 years.

Hours of Service awards for fiscal year 2016 were presented by Michael

Vance, Volunteer Specialist with the the Buckeye Region of the

American Red Cross. Awarded were Dwight McFarland, 264 hours;

Barbara Chapman 509 hours and Bob Cunningham, 1,444 hours.

Blood donor awards were made by Rita Barton to Don Burdsall, John

Halfhill, Cindy White, Ross Bigelow, Teresa Schuman, Sandra Fisher,

Alvin Miller, Suzanna Colegrove, Maranda Morse, Steven Schuman, Dorothy

Burggraf, Ronald Swisher, Brenda Morse, Renee Ness, Beverly Arndt,

Esther Yake, Gerald Payton, and Donald Strohl.

Addressing the group was Todd James, executive director of the

North Central Ohio Chapter of the American Red Cross.

This event, held at the Marengo United Methodist Church, included a pizza

buffet with pizza donated by Pizza Hut, Domino’s, and Purple Indian, Mount Gilead; Highland Pizza, Pizza to Go and Rolling Dough Pizza, Marengo; and

Discount Drug Mart donated six cases, 24 bottles of water. Desserts and

soft drinks were donated by members of the Leadership Council.

A door prize raffle concluded the evening.
