Rudelle (Rudy) Gilbert was honored as the Outstanding Morrow County Senior Citizen for 2016 during Senior Day at the Morrow County Fair.

The award is sponsored by District 5 of the Area 0 Agency on Aging.

Gilbert, while in high school, wrote a personal column for the local paper She was later employed at various times, with the Pentagon, a grocery story and with an insurance company. Following her marriage to Lewis Gilbert in 1946, she helped her husband on the farm as they raised two daughters.

When her husband became ill, first with a heart attack and later, a stroke in 2002, she became a devoted caregiver. Following his death she volunteered with the Morrow County Extended Care Facility and later organized a group to assist with bingo at Woodside Village Care Center.

A member of the Edison United Methodist Church, Rudy, recently honored as the church’s Woman of the Year, works every steak supper, bake sale and rummage sale. She belongs to the Morrow County Society for Crippled Children, assists with the hospital’s Twig groups and helps prepare over 300 bagged lunches for the needy at a Cardington church.

She is also an active member of the Chester Arbor of the Gleaner Fraternal Insurance Society. Her warm personality coupled with her caring ways combines to make Rudy a worthy recipient of this honor.

Presenting the award were the Morrow County Commissioners (Dennis Leader, Richard Miller and Tom Whiston) and Linda Ruehrmund, president of the Board of Directors of the Seniors on Center.
