Maternity care ‘deserts’ concerning
Today, childbearing services are becoming scarcer in rural counties in Ohio. Rural communities like Morrow County are often referred to as “maternity care deserts,” meaning there is a lack of maternity care resources, no hospital offering obstetric care, or no obstetric providers.
Agency on Aging earns prestigious award
The Area Agency on Aging is thrilled to announce that its Community Care Services Program received a 2023 Aging Innovations Award from USAging, one of the highest honors presented by USAging to its members. The Community Care Program provides in-home services to vulnerable individuals through a team of registered nurses (RNs) and state-tested nursing assistants (STNAs) through enabling services for clients with immediate needs when the local provider network is unable due to lack of capacity.

The Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center (MOESC) was one of four of Ohio’s educational service centers to secure an Ohio Department of Education bid to serve in Gov. Mike DeWine’s Building Regional Capacity to Support Ohio’s Literacy Coaching Model literacy project.
Highland releases free/reduced lunch info
Highland Local Schools announced on Aug. 2 its 2023-2024 program year policy for free and reduced priced meals for students unable to pay the full price of meals or milk served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast. Each school office and the central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party.

Swimming back at Dash at Dusk
The Dash at Dusk, a favorite tradition in Mount Gilead, is set to return next week. The race will be held on Thursday, Aug. 10, with registration beginning at 6 p.m. The pump and run will be held at 7 p.m. and the 5K race at 8 p.m.
Council updated on police department
At the July 17 meeting of the Mount Gilead Village Council, Police Chief Adam Lakey announced the retirement of officer Roger Meyer, effective Aug. 1.
