Friday marked history at Highland Local School as they hosted their Fall Sports Madness event and introduced their first ever varsity soccer teams.
It was a good night to be a Fighting Scot as both the girls and boys teams dominated against Galion on the beautiful newly turfed field, part of a million dollar renovation recently completed at Highland. Loyal fans filled the stands as the Lady Scots kept the pressure on the Galion Tigers. The first goal for the girls was scored by freshman Brooke Ratliff with two additional goals made by senior Madison Ward and supporting goals made by juniors Olivia Sheets and Molly Delaney and senior Meg Mitchell, for an impressive score of 6-1, which is high for any soccer match.
The boys’ varsity team took their cues from the ladies and scored big early on with two goals within the first 3:30 by team captain and senior Vinny Wiley, who went on to score a total of three for a hat trick along with help from his mates, senior Andrew Ruckman and Garrett Milburn, who added singles to the score for a final of 5-1.
The excitement of the evening was redoubled by the Highland Marching Band playing beautiful renditions of Adele and other popular music, as well as half-time introductions to all the athletes who come together to make up Highland Athletics, including cheerleaders. If this night is any indication of what’s to come for Highland Scots soccer, then it was well worth the wait.
