This year, Relay For Life teams ,vendors and guests braved the hot temperatures to attend the 17th annual Relay For Life of Morrow County event, which took place at Gilead Friends Church.
About 110 cancer survivors and their caregivers attended a special reception prior to the opening ceremony where the survivors received their gifts, medals, and purple survivor shirts. As part of the opening ceremony, Lisa Saunders shared her cancer story and how cancer has not only affected her life personally, but her family and friends as well.
The cancer survivors lined up on the track and released their “Wings of Hope”, their live butterflies. While the remainder of the crowd lined the track and celebrated their victory over cancer, the survivors walked the first lap of Relay. Their caregivers joined them on the second lap while everyone continued to celebrate. The survivors and caregivers enjoyed some free time to visit the teams and vendors and then enjoyed a special meal .
Throughout the remainder of the 12 hours, there was a variety of fun laps and activities designed to keep everyone entertained and engaged in the fight against cancer. The first, second, and third place winners in each activity were awarded Spirit Points .
