Ebola, it is a disease that created fear and devastation around the world over the past few years. Diseases such as this impact our lives, as well as recurring “old” diseases such as chickenpox and measles.
The Ohio Chapter for the National Association of Associate Degree Nursing (OOADN) ), in partnership with Central Ohio Technical College’s (COTC) Workforce Development Innovation Center (WDIC) and COTC’s Health Sciences & Nursing divisions are hosting a conference called Clinical Updates: A Community Perspective on Global Diseases to examine such issues.
Featured speaker Dr. Jim O’Brien of the Sepsis Alliance will present current information on sepsis and septic shock. Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection. It occurs when chemicals released into the bloodstream to fight the infection trigger inflammatory responses throughout the body. This inflammation can end up damaging multiple organ systems, causing them to fail.
“Sepsis can result from any disease, any illness, and any injury to the body. More than 258,000 people die each year from this complication,” said COTC Dean for Health Sciences and Nursing Programs Administrator Sandra Walker, E.J.D., MS, RN.
The one- day conference will also provide an overview of communicable diseases in both the adult and pediatric populations. Community response to global and regional disease will also be discussed. The event will conclude with a session on surveillance and emerging diseases/pathogens that pose a threat to the public’s health today and in the future.
The conference is scheduled for Friday, March 4 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be held in the Reese Center on the campus of COTC and The Ohio State University at Newark. The conference is open to nurse educators, nursing students, nurses and/or physicians and EMS personnel, or others interested in this topic. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered for attending the conference.
