The August 10 Cardington-Lincoln Board of Education meeting was a bit of a celebration for board members.
Board President Chuck Jones introduced Jon Mason, treasurer of the Highland School District, as the new shared treasurer of the Cardington-Lincoln District during a reception held for Mason before the regular board meeting.
“Jon Mason is the right man at the right time in the right situation,” Jones said. “You have to look around in the state and find just a few shared services with respect to shared treasurers, and now we are part of that number. Jon Mason’s record at Highland speaks for itself – you can look at their forecast – it is clear they are doing some things right. We appreciate Highland’s Board allowing us to share Jon. We have a lot of good things going – it’s a great thing for us- it’s going to take a lot of communication and we are going to make the shared services agreement work.”
Mason was named shared treasurer with the Highland Board and the Cardington-Lincoln School District and given a two year contract effective August 1, 2015.
Jones than introduced Loren Altizer, vice president of the Highland Board of Education who said, “Our motto is ‘we care about the whole child. Jon’s involved with every aspect of what we do.”
He said they have had good years at Highland. He praised Mason for his progressive leadership during his years at the school.
Mason thanked Jones and Altizer for their ‘kind words.” He said it was a good time for him and credited his support staff for the great help they have been. “I’m excited to get going.” he said.
During the board’s meeting, Mason gave the treasurer’s report noting that the positives are the income tax was received for the quarter and was on target on what Scott (Osborne) forecast. $308,000. There were several payments in July, he said, noting “we spent more than we took in during the month.” We also received the second half real estate settlement, he said. He said Darla Hardwick had done a “tremendous job in getting caught up with PO’s and invoices.”
The board approved the report. On another subject he discussed the need for new buses and suggested the Bus Lease Purchase through MEC Competitive Bid. The board approved the acquisition of two buses on a five year lease. Each is a 71 passenger conventional from the Rush Bus Center.
Approved also were the establishment of fund accounts: Elementary Guidance Grant Wages; Elementary Guidance Grant Fringe Benefits; Elementary Guidance Grant Supplies; Elementary Guidance Grant Purchased Services and the Class of 1965 Students Support Account.
Giving her report was Jennifer Zierden who gave her summer school report. She said this was the first year for summer school. Supt Brian Petrie gave an updated report on the state budget.
The board approved payment of severance to Linda Brown ($7,983.04) Bonnie Carsner ($1,059.67); Jan Branham, ($6,465.27) and Sally Dye ($23,594.48.
Also approved was the Certified Substitute List (MOESC).
The board approved the three year lease purchase from Apple Computer of 100 13-inch MacBook Air (With AppleCare) and 25 21.5 inch Mac with Apple Care) at a total cost of $152,000. Supt Petrie explained that, “it’s been a significantly long time that we have a major update to the machines. We have updated as much as possible – we have replaced pieces of machines as opposed to buying new ones – some were purchased in 2005 and some in 2007 – the reason they have lasted a long time is we insisted on using Apple Computers- it’s also a credit to the staff and administrators- we will be replacing the mobile labs in each of the four buildings. There’s no other place we can go to purchase them at a lower price. We get a $50 discount per unit- we’re getting an extended discount. There is a three year warranty.”
He further explained that the 25 21.3 inch Macs are being purchased with a discount of $55 each.
The addition of Darla Hardwick to FC Bank Accounts was approved.
Under the consent agenda the board approved the certified resignation of Greta Kanagy, Guidance Counselor effective July 7, 2015.
One year limited contracts were approved for the following certified employees: David Carter and Justin Lorko, Elementary Guidance; Eric Staley, JH/HS ELA and Intervention.
Classified employees approved include: Mike Wilson, custodian; Bob Coffman, and Dan Lemke, bus drivers, each employee for a one year contract.
The board granted a 2 year limited exempt non-teacher contract to Darla Hardwick, assistant treasurer.
Certified substitutes approved were Sally Dye and Judy Keil.
Classified substitutes approved were Mike Wilson and Rhonda Gandee sub bus drivers.
Summer School Tutoring was approved for Jake Mories, Kirsten Ebert and Todd Joliff, each from June 8 to July 31, 2015.
The board approved the Federal Elementary Guidance Grant Program Director, Carolyn Beal.
Supt Petrie said he would like to look into the opportunity to acquire a school resource officer and also the possibility of school uniforms.
The board entered executive session at 8 pm based on ORC 121.22 (G) 1, 2,3, 4, 5 and 6.
At the conclusion of the executive session at 9 pm, the board adjourned its regular meeting.
