Esther D. (Linn) Chapman, age 97, of Mount Gilead, passed away Saturday evening, November 21, 2020, at Morrow Manor in Chesterville, surrounded by her loving family.

On October 7, 1923, Esther was born at home in Mount Gilead, Ohio, a daughter of the late Tolly H. and Laura E. (Hull) Linn. She graduated from Chesterville High School in the Class of 1941.

Esther married the love of her life, Carl E. Chapman, in the tenant house on the family farm. The barn that the house was affiliated with is the big red barn that has since been razed and reassembled at the Flying Horse Farms. She always talked about the amount of mud they had to walk through to get up the lane. Esther and Carl shared over 68 wonderful years together as husband and wife before he preceded her in death on March 21, 2011.

Dairy farming was all they knew at the Chapman Family Farm. In fact, the 80-100 head of Holstein cattle were a family affair. Esther would milk right beside Carl and their son Dennis, always two times a day.

A woman of faith, Esther was an active member of the Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church over the years where she was very involved with the United Methodist Women. She and Carl played an instrumental role in the remodeling and rededication of the church sanctuary.

Esther loved to get dressed up and go out. She could be in overalls and dirty boots then 20 minutes later in her best pant suit and heels all ready to go. She always enjoyed Saturday’s when she would get dressed up, go to O’Neil’s for lunch and then go shopping.

Esther will be dearly missed by her son, Dennis Chapman of Mount Gilead; son-in-law, Dave Denman of Mount Gilead; six grandchildren: Shelly Chapman of Atlanta, GA, Scott (Dee) Chapman of Atlanta, GA, Rich (Brenda) Denman of Mount Gilead, Kendra (Larry) Daniels of Mount Gilead, Renee Ferenbaugh of Mount Vernon, Kathy Gantz of Fredericktown; 10 great grandchildren: Michael, Brooke (Chase), Bristan (Mike), Payton (Nathan), Brogin, Emily, Julie, Joshua, Cara, T.J.; four great-great grandchildren, Jax, Briar, Ashlynn, Mia; a sister-in-law, Betty Chapman of Chesterville; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Patti Denman; daughter-in-law, Esther Chapman; grandson, Jeff Ferenbaugh; sister: Lucile (Jim) Dawson; and in-laws: Chuck (Genevieve) Chapman, Bob Chapman, and Oris (Louise) Chapman.
