The Highland softball team got off to a fast start at home against Fairbanks in the Division III tournament on Wednesday, but couldn’t maintain it in suffering a 9-2 defeat.

In the game, which was rescheduled from Tuesday due to weather conditions, the Scots scored a pair of runs in the first inning. However, they would be unable to add to that total and their opponents would rally late. Fairbanks scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take a one-run lead and then put the game away with a six-run sixth inning.

Abby O’Bryant pitched the opening 5.1 innings, with Lucy Smith finishing the game. They combined to strike out one, walk two and give up five hits. Ashlyn Jordan cracked a double for the Scots, who finished with four hits in the game.
