Cardington opened their softball season with a 9-0 win over Galion Monday.

Savannah Chalfant pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out 14 and walking two, to lead the Pirates to victory. The Pirates scored five runs in the third inning to take a commanding lead and then added one in the fifth and three more in the ninth.

In that five-run third, Chalfant helped her cause with a three-run homer and Dakota Crum added a run-scoring double.

Highland Scots

The Highland girls fell in their first softball game, losing to Danville by a 14-8 margin.

The Scots led 4-0 after the opening inning, but the Blue Devils came back to tie things at 5-5 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. They would score four there and four more in the fifth to take a commanding lead and then held off a seventh-inning rally by Highland to claim the win.

Kaitlyn Carney had a double for the Scots. Lucy Smith and Abby O’Bryant combined to strike out two and walk four, while giving up 13 hits.
