Highland lost a close one at North Union on Wednesday by a 60-58 margin in double overtime.

The Scots got off to a fast start, taking a 17-8 lead after the opening period, but North Union took the second quarter 19-10 to tie the score, and then had a 14-7 edge in the third to take a 41-34 lead into the fourth.

Highland came back in the final period to send the game to overtime at 49-49. Both teams scored five points in the first extra session, but the Wildcats outscored the Scots 6-4 in the second overtime to claim the win.

Alex Mason scored 15 points to lead the Scots, while Mack Anglin added nine and both Dylan Tuggle and Shane Carney scored eight.

Mount Gilead Indians

Host Mount Vernon got off to a fast start against Mount Gilead Wednesday and didn’t let up on their way to taking a 69-37 win over the Indians.

The Yellow Jackets led 21-7 after one quarter of play and then outscored their opponents 16-14 in the second period, 19-8 in the third and 13-8 in the fourth to pull away for the win.

Mason Mollohan led MG with 12 points, while Zack Hosack added 11.

Cardington Pirates

The Cardington basketball team couldn’t keep up with River Valley in suffering a 60-39 loss on the road Wednesday night.

The Pirates fell behind 19-10 after the first quarter and were then outscored 15-12 in the second and 17-5 in the third. While they took the final eight minutes by a 12-9 margin, they would not be able to get back into the game.

Two players provided the bulk of Cardington’s offense, as Trey Williams scored a team-high 15 points and Devin Pearl added 14.
