The Cardington eighth grade girls basketball team is off to a strong start this season.

In their season opener against Northmor, Cardington won 57-9. Cardington jumped out to an early 18-2 lead at the end of the first quarter due to some aggressive team defense. Casey Bertke scored 24 and Hanna Wickline added 16 points for Cardington. Mic Zeger led Northmor with four points. Cardington also won the seventh grade game 30-4.

They would then beat East Knox 63-17. The Bulldogs scored first off the tip and the first quarter was competitive with Cardington leading 19-10. However, Cardington outscored East Knox 20-2 in the second period to open things up and led 39-12 at the half. Bertke scored 28 and Wickline added 17, while Baylee Adams had six.

On Dec. 7, Cardington traveled to Mount Gilead in a battle of unbeaten teams and won 38-27. The first half was hard-fought with the Pirates holding a slim 12-10 halftime advantage. However, Cardington opened the second half with a 21-4 third quarter run and then held off the feisty Lady Indians to take home the 38-27 win. Bertke scored 23 points and Wickline added 12 for Cardington.
