After a victory in the sectionals, Galion’s volleyball team looks to outshine last year’s postseason by winning its district tournament match this week.
The Lady Tigers (16-7) will face off against No. 2 seed Huron in a district semifinal 8 p.m. Wednesday at Seneca East High School in Attica. Galion’s third postseason match is one of two district tournament matches of the Div. III Attica District. The other match features No. 1 seed Edison against No. 6 seed Mohawk.
If Galion defeats Huron (16-7), the team will then advance to battle the other district winner on Halloween.
In 2014, Galion won its first and second tournament match respectively against Sandusky and Bellevue, before losing to Norwalk with a 3-1 rout in the district tournament.
Galion, seeded No. 4, became sectional champs after defeating No. 3 seed and host Ashland Crestview by scores of 20-25, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-18, last Saturday. The Tigers had a 2-0 victory against the Cougars (14-9) at the Shelby Invitational volleyball tournament in September.
Galion recorded 112 digs, 50 kills, 46 assists and 43 serving points during its second match against Crestview. The Tigers had 22 digs, 25 kills, 24 assists and 23 serving points in its September match against the Cougars.
Crestview finished it second match against Galion with 119 digs, 54 kills, 46 assists and 36 serving points. In its first match against Galion, the Cougars had 44 digs, 20 kills, 18 assists and 14 serving points.
Taylor Valentine lead Galion with 23 kills and 30 digs. Marisa Gwinner recorded 16 kills and five digs, while Bradlee Saterfield and Kiki Staton both finished with four kills. Saterfield also had 42 assists, 15 digs and three serving aces.
Ashley Flowers tallied 23 digs for Galion. Kasidee Sinclair and Dusty Thomas added 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
Natalie Restille lead the Cougars with 14 kills and seven digs. Kennedy Hickey had 37 digs, while Macie Restille tallied 23 digs and 13 kills for Crestview. Renee Stimpert tallied 16 assists and 12 digs.
