Cardington held off East Knox in picking up a wild 59-57 double overtime win over the Bulldogs in a Friday night home boys’ basketball game.

The Pirates trailed by a slim 12-11 margin after eight minutes of play, but rallied to lead 19-16 at the intermission. East Knox went back in front by a 32-31 count at the end of the third, but Cardington tied things up at 42 to send the action to overtime. Both teams scored eight in overtime, so the game went to a second extra period, where Cardington took a 9-7 advantage to outlast the Bulldogs.

Trey Brininger scored 22 points to lead the Pirates, while Mason White scored 12 in the contest.

On Saturday, Cardington made it two wins in as many days when they topped Tree of Life by a 62-49 count.

Highland Scots

Highland played visiting Centerburg closely in the first quarter of their Friday night game, but the Trojans were able to pull away for a 63-42 victory.

The Scots were tied at 13 with their opponents after one period of play, but they were outscored 13-6 in the second period to find themselves in a 26-19 hole going into the half. Centerburg then took a 16-11 advantage in the third and a 21-12 edge in the fourth to pull away for the win.

Brock Church’s 19 points led Highland, while Jordan Bellamy added 10 in the contest.

Mount Gilead Indians

Mount Gilead couldn’t overcome a slow start in dropping a 77-37 decision at Fredericktown on Friday.

The Freddies jumped in front by a 20-3 lead after the first quarter. While the Indians took a 12-10 advantage in the second period, they still trailed by 15 going into the half. Fredericktown extended their lead to a 54-29 lead after three period of play and were able to continue pulling away for the big win.

Elijah Chafin’s 18-point night led MG on the night.
