Cardington opened their basketball season with an overtime win against Utica at home Thursday by a 51-46 margin.

The Pirates looked to have things in hand early, leading 18-10 after eight minutes of play and 31-21 at the half. However, Utica closed within a 41-37 margin by the end of the third quarter and then held Cardington to one point in the fourth, as they tied the score at 42. The locals bounced back in the extra session, though, scoring nine points to finish with the non-league victory.

The Pirates were strong from long range, hitting 10 three-pointers in the game. Garrett Wagner had five in scoring 23 points, while Cayman Spires added three more and finished with 10.
