The Northmor wrestling team not only won their sectional meet at Cardington on Saturday, but also sent 10 wrestlers on to this week’s district competition.

The Knights finished with 206 points to finish 24 in front of West Jefferson in the 12-team Division III meet. Host Cardington finished 11th with seven points.

Northmor was paced by three sectional champions. Conan Becker took first at 138 pounds, defeating Newark Catholic’s Billy Luft in the finals by a 5-0 margin. His brother, Conor, won at 145, claiming a pin in the finals in 2:26 over Mark Woodard of West Jefferson. At 182 pounds, Mason Burger won by 10-5 decision over Phillip Barrows of Utica to also claim a championship.

Three more wrestlers finished second. Aaron Kitts fell by default in the 132-pound championship, while both Matthew Ross (152) and Nathan Price (220) were pinned in their championship bouts.

Northmor’s other four sectional qualifiers were all third-place finishers. Manny Heilman took third at 106 pounds, as did Jakob Neer at 120, Gavin Ramos at 126 and D.J. Christo at 220.

The Knights also have two district alternates, with Tony Martinez (160) and Ben Singer (170) both finishing fifth in their weight classes. Austin Amens added a sixth-place finish at 113 pounds.

For Cardington, their lone wrestler, Taiylor Hubley advanced to districts after finishing fourth at 106 pounds.

Mount Gilead Indians

Competing in the Division III sectional meet hosted by Madison Plains, Mount Gilead tied for third place with 117 points and sent six wrestlers on to districts. North Union won the meet with 166 points.

Of MG’s six qualifiers, two were champions. Brandon Strickland, competing at 145 pounds, pinned Kyler Baker of Grandview Heights in 3:04 to take first. Kaleb Fisher won at 285 with a pin over Robert Gross of Fredericktown at the 3:39 mark.

Nate Weaver finished second at 126 pounds to advance, as did third-place winner Jullian Anderson (195 pounds). Finishing fourth were Dominick Sullivan (152) and Tracy Lilly (170).

Both Lane Carpenter (132) and Zack McCallen (138) finished fifth to be district alternates.

Highland Scots

Highland finished seventh at the Division II sectional hosted by Licking Valley, tallying 70 points and sending a pair of wrestlers to the district meet. Steubenville finished first with 273 points.

Zach Baker claimed a sectional championship for the Scots. In a re-match of his league championship match, he took on River Valley’s Austin Weingarner in the finals and claimed a pin in 4:14. Christian Miller finished third at 113 pounds to also advance in the postseason.

Two more Highland wrestlers are district alternates in Sean Dudgeon (132) and Alex Presley (170). Also, Gavin DeAngelo finished sixth at 120 pounds.
