Cardington overwhelms Elgin

Cardington cruised to a Homecoming win over Elgin Friday night, scoring eight touchdowns in the first half in taking a 77-22 win.

The Pirates opened the game with Daniel Kill returning the opening kickoff 90 yards for a score. Kill would then tally another touchdown on a four-yard run. Luke McCarrell also tossed touchdowns of 23 to Garrett Wagner and 30 to Devin Pearl to give Cardington a 28-0 lead after the opening period.

In the second quarter, McCarrell threw two more touchdowns, connecting with Pearl on a four-yard play and with Wagner for a 21-yard score. The senior quarterback also ran for a 34-yard touchdown. Mason Goers added a 56-yard touchdown run to end the half with the Pirates in front 56-0.

Goers scored three more times in the second half, running for a 44-yard TD in the third quarter and one of 24 yards in the fourth. He also had an 88-yard kick return after Elgin scored in the third period.

McCarrell threw for 144 yards and ran for 48 more. Goers led the team with 144 rushing yards. Wagner was the top receiver in the game, catching four passes for 66 yards. Branden Steckel finished with 11 successful PAT attempts.

Mount Gilead Indians

East Knox finished their game with Mount Gilead Friday with nine straight fourth quarter points to win 18-13.

The Indians led 7-6 in the first quarter after Jonah Barnett ran for a 62-yard score and Scott Page added an extra point, but the Bulldogs got a touchdown and a field goal to lead 9-7 at the intermission.

Cole Grace ran back an interception early in the fourth quarter to put MG up 13-9, but the ensuing kickoff was run back for a touchdown. Then, with the score 16-13, East Knox got a safety to provide their final margin of victory.

MG suffered the loss despite out-gaining their opponents 299-150. Barnett ran for 156 yards, while Bland threw for 76, with Mason Mollohan catching four passes for 70 of that total.
