On July 28, 2014, a day after his 84th birthday, Gerald Walker was inducted into the Ohio State Fair Swine Hall of Fame.
Walker was nominated by his fellow Ohio Duroc Breeders.
Walker has been raising Durocs since 1945 when, as a member of the Hilliard FFA, he was selected to receive the chapter’s Duroc chain gilt. 69 Years later, he is still raising Durocs.
On the day of his induction at the Duroc Show Auction, he purchased the reserve champion boar, another first place boar, and three gilts to continue improving the show pigs he provides for his grandchildren, great grandchildren and countless 4-H and FFA members to show at area county fairs and the Ohio State Fair.
Walker and his family have shown at the Ohio State Fair since 1962. Over the years he has had several first place winners. Showing at the State Fair and county fairs has always been the highlight of the year for him. From the time the little pigs are born in the farrowing house, he is already judging them, watching them, and looking for the ones good enough to show.
