On Thursday April 3, 2014, Ohio Auditor of State David Yost issued a press release concerning an investigation involving the former Tomorrow Center principal Michael Heath.

In May 2011, the school’s board of directors passed a resolution authorizing bidding for occupational and speech therapy services. In February 2012, school director Michael Heath contracted these services to Brickner’s, Inc. The contract was signed by Heath and the president of Brickner’s, Inc., Val Heath, his wife.

Occupational and speech therapy services were provided to the school from December 30, 2011 to June 7, 2013. A finding for recovery was issued against the Heaths in the amount of $53,239. This matter has been referred to the Ohio Ethics Commission.

Mount Gilead Superintendent Jeff Thompson issued a statement regarding the finding.

“The Mt. Gilead Board of Education is aware of the investigation involving Michael Heath, an administrator who no longer works for the School District, in relation to his position at the Tomorrow Center. The Mount Gilead Exempted Village School Districts’ Treasurer also serves as the Treasurer for The Tomorrow Center, and through the normal course of review during the Spring of 2013, discovered a potential administrative issue. The district sought advice from the district’s legal counsel and, based upon this advice, took action, including self-reporting a possible issue regarding expenses at The Tomorrow Center. The district views this as an ongoing investigation and, as such, to comment any further would be unfair to Mr. Heath and this investigation. It is important to note that at no time was the health, safety and welfare of the students and staff at The Tomorrow Center in question.

Heath is now employed as a high school principal by the Johnstown-Monroe School District. The district issued this statement to the press, “April 3, 2014.. Today, the Ohio Auditor of State released its findings regarding an issue which involves Michael Heath, our High School Principal. Realizing there are many issues to be evaluated surrounding this finding, we are declining comment on this report until more information becomes available.” Supt. Nelson Mccray, Board Pres. Ruth Ann Booher.
