Kicking off February Heart month were 22 members of the Pleasant Shockers, a jump rope team, who performed for Cardington-Lincoln students in grades K-4 on Friday, January 31.
The Shockers, whose coach is Teri Birchfield, are comprised of fourth and fifth grade students who perform a non-stop series of jump rope variations.
The performance took place in the Patterson Gym at the elementary school.
“Jump Rope for Your Heart,’ is their slogan and the performance is meant to encourage students to participate in jumping rope for better health.
The Pleasant Shockers were invited and hosted by Chester Arbor of the Gleaner Fraternal Insurance Society, whose members were present. Their goal is to encourage a healthy life style by exercising and other heart healthy practices.
The Gleaners encourage rope jumping by giving a jump rope to every student in the school. There were 460 ropes distributed at the Cardington school. Assisting with the jump rope program at Cardington was Joel Nichols, Physical Education teacher. Also assisting with the rope distribution were Whetstone Industries associates.
The Gleaners have teamed up with the Pleasant Shockers in past years with programs given at Mount Gilead and River Valley Schools.
“The kids look forward to their different shills and tricks they do with the ropes,” said Marilyn Davis, a member of the Gleaners.
K-4 Principal Scott Hardwick expressed appreciation to the Gleaners for the jump ropes and for bringing the Shockers to the school. He also thanked the students and staff of Pleasant for their performance.
