The Ohio Farm Bureau’ support for Flying Horse Farms (FHF) came alive in a new way last Saturday as 80 people walked the paths at the camp for seriously ill children in Mount Gilead. “Grow it. Know it. And Give it” was the theme for the event that featured locally produced food and Ohio wines.
The evening began with music and hors d’oeuvres in the great hall of the “Big Red Barn.” Violinists, Meg Litteral and Dina Snow performed classical pieces throughout the first hours of the event while guests enjoyed cheeses from Sippel Family Farm, punch and Ohio wines served by Happy Grape Chef, Aaron Grosch.
Tours around the camp were led by Flying Horse staff member, Don Wiggins and loyal camp volunteer, Erin Kelty. Guests enjoyed an afternoon stroll past the recreation hall, swimming pool, lake and got to have a peek inside the campers’ cabins before going to the dining hall for dinner. Local pork and beef entrees were featured and dessert was S’mores Bread Pudding with a “mouth-watering” blackberry glaze. All were prepared by Malabar Farm Restaurant Chef, Joe Motter.
Wiggins talked about how the Farm Bureau had worked with the camp last year to set up a garden to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for campers. He thanked guests and the Farm Bureau for supporting the camp where kids with diabetes, heart problems and other serious illnesses can “just let loose and be kids.”
“It’s great the way this community has wrapped its arms around Flying Horse Farms and supported us,” said Wiggins.
Tim Hicks, Farm Bureau Organization Director for Crawford, Marion, Morrow, and Richland Counties, said the FHF event matched the core purpose of the Farm Bureau in “working together for Ohio’s Farmers while looking for opportunities to build and make connections in our communities.”
Hicks thanked the many volunteers who made the evening possible including: Morrow County Volunteers Brad Snow who was Event Coordinator, Dina Snow, Don and Miriam Bloom, Heather Goodman, Andrea Bayles, and Lisa Sippel. Delaware County volunteer was Gene McCurdy and Richland County volunteers were Tim and Jenna Hicks and Tim Johnson.
Hicks said that the event raised $5,000 for Flying Horse Farms. He said $62 from each guest’s meal ticket will help provide operating expenses for the camp garden and campers. He also thanked corporate sponsors who include Marion Technical College, Luke’s Country Meats, Kokoborrego Cheese Co., Sippel Family Farm, Homestead Acres, Nationwide Insurance Marla Evans Agency, Farm Credit Mid-America, Katherine Harrison, Ag Credit Country Mortgages and Morrow, Richland and Delaware County Farm Bureaus.
Hicks thanked Chef Joe Motter of Malabar Farm Restaurant, as well as Hannah, Christian and Rachel Motter and Happy Grape Chef, Aaron Grosch who contributed their time in preparing and serving the meal.
Chef Joe Motter commented that he had at first volunteered to help Tim Hicks because he had worked with the Farm Bureau on events in the past.
“Then I visited the camp and took the tour and realized that what they are doing here is really important,” Motter said with a smile.
