The Mount Gilead softball team opened its season with a doubleheader against East Knox on Saturday.

In the first game, the Indians nearly pulled off the win, but surrendered five runs on four hits in the seventh inning to fall by a 10-7 margin.

Mount Gilead led 1-0 after the opening frame during the home game and 5-0 after three, but the Bulldogs battled back, scoring three in the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth to tie things up. The Indians regained the lead by getting two in the bottom of the frame, but would not be able to hold the advantage for the full seven innings.

Rachael Groves suffered the loss for the Indians. Offensively, Sarah Moodispaugh had two doubles and a single, while Raygan Walters added a double and two singles.

In the second game, the Bulldogs used a four-run third inning to spark them to a 6-1 win. Mount Gilead did load the bases with no one out in the fifth in a comeback attempt, but East Knox was able to get out of the jam unscathed.

Moodispaugh suffered the loss in the contest. Alexis Clark had two singles to lead the team offensively.

Highland Scots

Highland’s softball season got off to a slow start last Tuesday with a 9-0 loss to Johnstown. The home team scored once in the first and then added five more in the second inning to give them a lead that held up the rest of the way.

Megan Oder and Hailey Moore combined to strike out seven and walk four, with Oder being the pitcher of decision for the Scots.

On Saturday, the Scots were topped 6-2 by Buckeye Valley in the first game of a doubleheader and 1-0 in the second game.

In the first game, Oder struck out seven and walked one, but took the loss, as the team could only muster four hits.

Highland picked up five in the second game, with Carley Gahm contributing two of those hits, but couldn’t light up the scoreboard. The Barons tallied one run in the sixth inning to provide their winning margin.

Moore finished with seven strikeouts with no walks, and pitched a two-hitter in a losing effort.
