MG swimmers compete in pair of meets
The Mount Gilead High School varsity swim team hosted a multi-team meet on Dec. 11 at the Marion YMCA. Teams competing were: Galion, Marion Harding, Marion Pleasant, Mansfield Christian, River Valley, Ridgedale and North Union.
Galion won both the women and the men’s competition. The Indians finished in third place for both.
Highlights of the meet included senior Brianna Snow, Aaron Evans and Jay Stratton dropping time in the 200 freestyle; Erin Zmuda swam the third fastest time in school history in the 50 yard freestyle - passing Kara Grossman - and also swam the second fastest 100 breaststroke in school history; Marion McGill and Spencer Faux both dropped nearly seven seconds in the 50 yard freestyle, while McGill dropped 33 seconds in the 500 yard freestyle. Also, setting personal best times were Logan Conrad, Lexie Hinkle, Taylor Clark, Kyle Landes, Hallie Marlow, and Stratton dropped time in the 100 backstroke.
“This was a great meet for us to host. The teams were very fast. Galion will be joining the MOAC next year so it was good to acquaint ourselves with them. They have a lot of strong swimmers that were probably coached on the Galion Y team by Mary Fuller and at the high school level, Ted Temple does a first class program,” said coach Brad Snow.
The second meet of the week was held at the beautiful Kenyon College Natatorium and hosted by Mount Vernon. Teams competing and combined order of finish were: Mount Vernon followed by Grove City, Mansfield Christian, Northridge, Mount Gilead and Columbus Bishop Ready.
Scoring for the Indians were: Jacob Barnhart, Savanah Christian, Aaron Evans, Elly Herr, Lexie Hinkle, David Kamyar, Colton Long, Hallie Marlow, Julia Marshall, Brianna Snow, Erika Stevens, and Erin Zmuda.
“Swimming at Kenyon is a great opportunity for our high school student athletes,” said Snow. “The amazing facility and the program the school has built over the years is hard to comprehend. We look forward to coming back again and competing at the Small Schools Invitational.”
